As a Sankalpa Teacher, you are a primary educator for children ages 3-5 in a supportive learning environment. Our program is based on the Reggio Emilia philosophy and incorporates outdoor learning, enquiry, play, music, the arts, yoga, movement, literacy, and more. 


Your role is crucial to the healthy development of our smallest students. We want to encourage each child to be true to their unique selves, inspire learning and exploration, and empower each child to reach their full potential. 


An emphasis is placed on listening and acknowledging the interests of each student and observing & documenting their growth in a way that can be continually communicated to parents and other supporting teachers. 


This role works together with the Lead Teacher of the program to follow Early Childhood Education curriculum and develop an outstanding classroom environment that fosters curiosity, learning, creativity, and play. 




  • Primary staff in charge of child care.

  • Plans and facilitates age appropriate, meaningful, and relevant programming and activities in collaboration with the Sankalpa Lead Teacher.  

  • Structure lessons, classroom environment, and general class planning based on the Reggio Emilia Philosophy.

  • Facilitates yoga classes appropriate for age & developmental stage of children. Class facilitates fine & gross motor skill development, physical literacy, listening, working together, and coordination. 

  • Creates an on-going positive relationship with the parents/guardians to keep them involved of their child's development & progress. Documents child’s interests and integrates these concepts into the curriculum.

  • Provides medical attention whenever necessary.

  • Keeps the space clean according to the Alberta Health standards by following the daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning duties assigned.

  • Maintain and demonstrate professional practices and ethics at all times.

  • Help the children in your care feel safe, comfortable, and nurtured.

  • Participate in programming in collaboration with the Lead Teachers and other educators (drawing on your observations, expertise, and knowledge).

  • Document children's learning and incorporate this in programming.

  • To prepare lesson plans in advance and in collaboration with the other team members- including objectives & purpose of activities which follow the Alberta Government Early Childhood Education Program Standards & Outline. 

  • To familiarize oneself with the MindUp Curriculumn and implement these ideas and philosophies in programming. 

  • To help coordinate extra-curricular programming within the Sankalpa classroom ex. Visits to the Calgary Reading House, visits from guest speakers, trips to the park, parent volunteer coordination etc.

  • Plan activities based on sound practice so that children are learning through having fun, play, and exploration. 

  • Report to the Director issues relating to children, parents, staff, or the program.

  • Ensure the environment is safe, secure, and well maintained by ensuring proper use of equipment and reporting any required maintenance.

  • Ensures that all furniture and fixtures are in good condition and reports to owner when repair is needed.

  • Ensures the safety of children at all times by following ratios, ensuring that the classroom is clean & presentable, and by staying up to date with specific requirements/ allergies/ notes from each child’s file.

  • Participate in evaluating and improving centre programming
    Adhere to the policies and procedures in the Policies & Procedures Handbook.




  • An Early Childhood Education Level 1 (or higher certification) is required for this position. 

  • CDS, CDW or CDA

  • Understanding and/or training in a Reggio Emilia Program or Course.

  • Children’s & Youth Yoga Certification and/or 200hr Yoga Teacher Certification preferred. 

  • First Aid/ CPR Certification.

  • Current Police Clearance and Vulnerable Sector Screening (no later than the past 5 months).

  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with parents.

  • Welcoming & inclusive attitude.

  • Emphasis that each child is equally important.

  • Classroom & behaviour management that aligns with the values & policies of the program.

  • Ability to work alongside and develop curriculum/ lesson plans with other teachers. 

  • Enthusiasm for encouraging young children to learn, be curious, and explore new concepts and activities.
